William Riley Godwin II, 89, of Hanahan, SC passed away on October 4, 2014 after a brief illness. Born a 5th generation Floridian in St. Cloud, FL on November 19, 1924 to Henry Lilburn and Evadne Harris Godwin, “W.R.” was an Eagle Scout, attended St. Cloud schools and graduated from St. Cloud High School in 1942. He enrolled at the University of Florida but left school to enlist in the United States Navy. Mr. Godwin was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and 4 Air Medals. He was authorized to wear the Air Crew Insignia with Gold Service Stars (combat missions) in addition to numerous other awards for service in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Mr. Godwin received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 and reentered the University of Florida graduating in 1949. While at UF he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and the University of Florida Marching Band. In 1965 he received his MBA from Rollins College. Mr. Godwin married Martha Granger of Kissimmee on May 19, 1951. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years. After a distinguished career in employee relations, Mr. Godwin retired in 1982. His retirement was spent traveling around the world, visiting his children and grandchildren, rekindling his love for music playing the trumpet in the Charleston Community Band and cheering for his beloved Gators. He was a member of Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church having served as an Elder. He continued to serve his fellow veterans as a member of the VFW Honor Guard. Mr. Godwin is survived by sons William R. Godwin III (Lynn) of Cary, NC; James R. Godwin (Virginia) of Alpharetta, GA; daughters Suzanne G. Ditmanson (Dale) of Gatlinburg, TN and Nancy G. Volland (Woodleigh) of Mt. Dora, FL. Mr. Godwin is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great grandson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, at 10:00 AM at Epiphany Anglican Church in Eustis, Florida. Interment will be at 2:30 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Kissimmee, Fl.
