Vivian Jean Schmidt Nostrand, age 100, of Mount Dora, FL passed away on February 3, 2023. Born in Kearny, NJ on March 14, 1922, to Walter and Phylis (Van Zile) Schmidt. Vivian grew up in Northeastern New Jersey and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Latin and Mathematics from Montclair State University. She worked in NYC and NJ as a Math and (advanced) Latin teacher, prior to WWII. Vivian served during WWII in the Navy Waves as an Aerographer’s Mate 2nd Class supporting aviation through interpreting weather data and developing forecasts for multiple air stations. Following WWII, her career was with Esso/Standard Oil Exxon where she worked in engineering and logistical economics, and eventually met and married Russel Nostrand. Vivian has been a resident of Mt. Dora since 1980 where she joined and was a faithful member of the Tangerine Community Church, Mt. Dora Golf and Lawn Bowling Clubs, and Exxon Annuitant Club. Vivian was a great athlete all her life, working out in a gym well into her 90’s. In addition to golf, she excelled in tennis and loved to swim. She enjoyed boating and deep sea fishing with family, and extensive worldwide travel with friends. Most of all Vivian will be remembered as a kind person. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Russell Nostrand; mother, Phylis Van Zile Schmidt; father, Walther John Schmidt; and brother, Walter John Schmidt Jr. She is survived by her nephews, Peter V. Schmidt and Bruce and Brad Nostrand; niece Tina S. Baker; eleven grandnieces and nephews, and six great grandnieces and nephews, and numerous extended family and friends. Memorial services will be on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Tangerine Community Church.
