Lestina Tyre Vaughn, 90, of Eustis, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011. She was born in High Springs, FL on April 6, 1921 to Dr. and Mrs. C. M. Tyre. Her parents moved to Eustis in 1927 where her father practiced medicine, surgery, and hypnosis until his passing in 1974. Lestina attended elementary school in Eustis and graduated from Eustis High School in 1939. During her Jr. and High School years she taught Sunday School to many preschoolers who attended the Methodist Church. Her hobbies as a child (and also as an adult) were sewing, cross-stitching and reading. She entered Florida Southern College where she was dorm monitor, a member of the Miss Southern Court in 1943, an Alpha Delta Pi Society member and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Home Economics. She did her practice teaching in Tarpon Springs and taught Home Economics in Sulphur Springs in the Tampa area for two years. She then returned to Eustis to become a bookkeeper for some of her father’s many businesses. In 1956 she married C. A. Vaughn Jr. (who was then Superintendent of Lake County Schools.) Their son, Charlie, was born in 1958 and the family spent 1½ years in New York City while her husband was attending Columbia University. She typed every word of his proposed dissertation where he received his Doctors Degree in Education. She also lovingly cared for their only child, performed all of her domestic duties and had occasional opportunities to enjoy the attractions of New York City. During the years her husband was headmaster of Howey Academy, she served as Social Hostess for the Academy; being responsible for many formal and informal teas, receptions, special events and banquets. She served as secretary for the family business, Lake Louise Land Trust, for many years. She was a Baptist. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years C.A. Vaughn Jr. on June 19, 2006. Survivors include her son, Charlie & Sheri Vaughn of Umatilla, FL; Sister, Maryse Dye, of Atlanta, GA; as well as her grandchildren, Shawn & Lyndsey Vaughn, of Leesburg, FL, Kirstina Vaughn, of Umatilla, FL and Justin Vaughn, of Sanford, FL; also a great grandchild, Rhys Vaughn.
