LaMontt L. "Monty" Boyd, 63, of Eustis, Florida, succumbed to the effects of Dermatomyositis surrounded by his loving family at Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares on Friday, October 11, 2013. Born in Logansport, Indiana, Monty came to Florida as an infant and moved with his family to Eustis in 1957 from Wildwood, Florida. Monty, affectionately known to many as “Coach”, is survived by his wife of 40 years, Adrian Headquist Boyd, Eustis, Florida; son, Chadwick Lee Boyd, Mount Dora, Florida; daughter, Lauren Louise Boyd (Stive) Colas, Tavares, Florida; mother, Mildred T. Boyd, Eustis, Florida; 3 grandchildren, Chadwick Lee Boyd, II, Skylar Cecile Colas, Jaylen Lee Colas; 2 sisters, Melba Boyd (James) Meriwether, Antioch, Tennessee; Nelda Boyd (Scott) Mayberry, Nashville, Tennessee; and a brother, William O. “Bill” (Joan) Boyd, Apopka, Florida. Monty was preceded in death by his father, Orvel H. Boyd, and a sister, Patti Jo Boyd. Monty graduated from Mount Dora Bible School in 1969, where he was an All-State basketball player. He received a scholarship to play basketball at Lipscomb University, Nashville Tennessee, where he graduated in 1973. Upon graduating from Lipscomb, Monty and Adrian returned to Lake County where he taught and coached basketball, track and cross country for more than 30 years. Coach Boyd’s track teams won state championships at both Mount Dora Bible and Umatilla High School. He also coached many individual state champions in track and led his basketball teams to District and Regional championships, as well as to the state championship tournament. Monty was devoted to his children, grandchildren, his mother and siblings, and he especially loved his high school sweetheart, Adrian. He never met a stranger. If you met Monty in a checkout line, he was your friend by the time you reached the cashier. He also loved working with children, with the kids at Tavares Elementary School having a special place in his heart. In addition to taking care of Adrian and his family, Monty enjoyed antiquing, spending time in the mountains of Western North Carolina and watching sports, especially the Florida Gators. He was a member of the Orange Avenue Church of Christ, Eustis. Monty’s family wish to thank the staff and teachers at Tavares Elementary School for their continuing concern, visits and gifts of Monty’s favorite foods brought to him following his retirement from TES. They also want to thank the members of the Orange Avenue Church of Christ for their overwhelming support of cards, food, prayers and love for Monty during his illness. Finally, they want to acknowledge the critical care nurses and doctors at Waterman for the expert and comforting care they provided Monty. A memorial service will be held at Orange Avenue Church of Christ, Eustis on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 10:30 AM.
