John Joseph Murphy, 93, of Tavares, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at his home at Brookdale Assisted Living Facility.
John was born February 7, 1927 to Martin and Anna (Harkins) Murphy. He was preceded in death by both parents.
John served 2 years in the United States Army during WWII. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He then furthered his education and received a Master’s Degree from Rutgers University.
John retired from a career at AT&T and began to enjoy traveling extensively throughout the world, enjoying the life of a bachelor. He settled into a retirement community in Mount Dora, Florida for several years, spending time with his bingo friends. When his health began to deteriorate, John moved into the assisted living facility in Tavares.
John is survived by a brother, Martin Murphy of Haddon, NJ: two sisters, Rose Skelly of Fort Myers, FL and Patsy Solas of Whiting, NJ; along with five nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and by his long-time friend Dennis Helmer of Leesburg, Florida.
John’s family and friends would like to thank the staff at Brookdale and the local Hospice staff. The care and compassion that was extended to John and his family and friends during these last difficult months is greatly appreciated.
Cremation arrangements are being made by Harden-Pauli in Eustis, Florida. A private interment will be held at a later date at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
