Gary Van Hammond, 69, of Leesburg, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018. Born in Covington, Kentucky, he moved to Leesburg in 2003 from Seminole County. He was an owner and operator of many waste management companies. He attended the First Baptist Church of Umatilla. Gary served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Gary was a member of the VFW and AMVETS. He was an ordained deacon at First Baptist Church of Boynton Beach and was an alumni of Palm Beach Junior College, Florida Atlantic University, and Palm Beach Atlantic University. He enjoyed scuba diving, fishing, camping, and his tropical fish aquariums. He is survived by Wife, Eleanor B. Hammond of Leesburg, FL; Sons, Gary Scott Hammond of Richmond, VA and Jeffrey Van Hammond of Winter Garden, FL; Daughters, Melissa Jean Scheckel of Umatilla, FL and Sheryl Lynn Hammond of Leesburg, FL; Brother, Robert Allen Hammond of Port Saint Lucie, FL; and 6 Grandchildren. Services will be held at Harden/Pauli Funeral Home Chapel, Eustis on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 1:00 PM. Interment will be held at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 11:00 AM.
