Dom Reynolds Underwood passed away Wednesday morning after a lengthy illness at the Haven Hospice Care Center in Gainesville, Florida. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Eugene T. and Mary Beth Underwood, Dom graduated from Norfolk Academy and was educated at Virginia Military Institute, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt University. A United States Marine Corps veteran, Dom served three tours in Vietnam. Upon leaving the corps Dom excelled as a salesman for 27 years with the Ace Glass Company of Vineland, New Jersey. A resident of Gainesville since 1972, Dom and his wife of 52 years Carleta, began the international ministry at First Baptist Church of Gainesville, Florida in 1979 at the urging of pastor Jerry Hayner. Upon moving to Westside Baptist Church of Gainesville, they began a successful international ministry that started as a Sunday School class that met under the trees. During his high school days, Dom played football and basketball, first at Woodrow Wilson High School and then at Norfolk Academy. At VMI he was a member of the glee club that sang at the inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dom was passionate about music, reading, politics, his family, the love of his life Carleta, and his unshakeable Christian faith. He is survived by Carleta, daughter Donna Perman (Eustis, Florida), sons Franz Beard (Gainesville, Florida) and Gregory Underwood (wife Julie, Johnson City, Tennessee), sister Carvel Taylor (Virginia Beach, Virginia), two grandchildren, three great grandchildren and three great-great children.
