Byrd Lee Huffines, 93, of Leesburg, Florida (formerly of Danville, California and Cookeville, Tennessee) passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022 at his son’s home in Grand Island, Florida. He was the husband of Betty Mabel Smith Huffines for over 65 years. Born, August 17, 1928, in Gainesboro, Tennessee, Lee was the son of the late Leslie James and Hattie Mae Long Huffines. He was retired after more than 40 years as a Flight Engineer with World Airways. His career included flying both civilian and Military charters into every continent and nearly every country around the globe. Lee was also a U. S Navy veteran who served in the Pacific Islands during the Korean Conflict. Lee was known as “Granddad” to most of his family. He loved his wife, sons, daughters-in-laws, and grandchildren unreservedly, but it was his great-grandchildren that brought him the most joy. He also loved and stayed in touch with his siblings and their families. Lee was very generous and quick to give wherever he saw a need. In addition to his wife, Lee was survived by sons: John David Huffines (Terry) of Grand Island, FL and James Mark Huffines of Amherst, VA, grandchildren: Jonni Marie Fonseca (Ryan) of Eustis, FL, Joshua Monn Huffines (Stefanie) of Altoona, FL, Jason Cody Huffines (Steffanie) of Sorrento, FL, Kaylee Michelle Claycomb (Chad) of Altoona, FL, Sarah Elizabeth Fore (Chris) of Charlotte, NC, Joshua Adam Huffines (Alyssa) of Madison Heights, VA, Rebecca Lee Pritchard (Corey) of Glen Mills, PA, Michael David Huffines (Jessica) of Amherst, VA, and Jeremy Gresham (Jessica Collier) of Lewisberry, PA: great-grandchildren: Garrett Wesley Hannigan, Rosalee Susanne Huffines, Emma Marie Fonseca, Colton Reed Huffines, Wyatt Scott Huffines, Hudson James Fonseca, Emery Rose Claycomb, Liam Bradley Huffines, Zion Christopher Fore and Jessalyn Claire Huffines: one sister: Mary Frances Russell of Pleasant Shade, TN, one brother-in- law, Murray Martin Smith of Grayson, GA, two sisters-in law: Jean Huffines and Mary Nell Huffines both of Cookeville, TN and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Charles Wayne Huffines and Bobby Gray Huffines, one sister, Hattie Molene Witt, one brother-in-law: Lester John Witt and one sister-in-law: Janice Powell Smith. Respecting his wishes, there will be no formal service. His remains will be interred in Draper Cemetery, Gainesboro, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
