Betty Ellen Starling Burkholder, 90 passed away on Monday, July 23 at the Ruleme Center in Eustis, Florida. Betty was born in 1921 in Detroit, MI and was the daughter of Raymond and Roma (Hughes) Starling. She was a resident of Dundee, Michigan for seventy years, graduated from Dundee High School in 1939 and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Betty and DeVerde M. Burkholder met in high school and married in 1941. After Mr. Burkholder returned from the Navy they built a home in Dundee which they lived in for fifty-two years. They were married for sixty-five years. Betty retired from the printing department at the University of Michigan where she was employed for twenty years. She enjoyed square dancing; she and her husband belonged to several square dancing clubs and danced both in Michigan and Florida several times a week. She loved to read, travel and dabbled in knitting and sewing. Surviving are her son DeVerde (Salemae) Burkholder Jr. of Florida; two daughters, Suzanne (George) Turner of Virginia and Sara (Ken) Falk of California; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Helen Adams Starling and many nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband, DeVerde Sr.; sister Ruth Schaeffer; two brothers, Ralph Starling and Robert Starling and parents, Raymond and Roma Starling. A memorial service will be held in Dundee, Michigan at St. John’s Lutheran Church on August 3rd at 11:00 am. The Rev. Michael Konow will officiate. Following the service the burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery. All are invited to a luncheon to be held in the church parish hall.
