Alvin Edgar Akers

Alvin “Doc” Edgar Akers, 90, of Eustis, went home to be with the Lord August 28th, 2010. -Born Sept. 27th 1919, in Fairmont West Virginia, to Jon Stanley Akers and Anna Pearl {Barkman}Akers. The family moved to Miami, Florida in 1925. Alvin graduated from Miami Senior High School, then continued his education at the University of Minnesota, receiving his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery.) He entered the US Navy as a Lieutenant in WWII {l943-46 serving as a Dental Surgeon, continuing in the reserves until 1961. He practiced dentistry in Allapattah and Coral Gables Florida, serving as past president {65-66} of the Miami Dental Society, and a member of the Florida Dental Association. In 1981, he moved his practice to Mt. Dora, Florida, where he retired in 2002, at the age of 82. “Doc” served to support the Shriner’s Burn and Crippled Children’s Hospital as a Mason – Lodge 85 Eustis Scottish Rite, Bahia Shriner’s Temple - Orlando and Royal Order of Jesters, Lake County Shrine Club and the Nomad band, the American Legion #0219 and Audubon Society. He was the most beloved of husbands, survived by his wife, E. Ruth Akers. As a WONDERFUL father, he is survived by his daughters, Molly Ann Popp, Janet Ruth (Thomas) Gray, and son, Jon Stanley (Donna) Akers. As a caring “Grandoc”, he is survived by Melanie (Sean) Murphy, Katelyn (Scott) Herrick, Kelly Popp, Jon Stanley (Cathy) Akers and two great grandchildren, Abigail and Amanda. As Ruth would always remind him “I love you Alvin Akers”, which he would reply,” I love you Ruth Akers, I really, really do.” We will miss you Alvin Akers and love you, we really, really do. A memorial service will be held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., on October 27th 2010, at 11:30 a.m. A Masonic service will follow at 2:00 p.m., at the Lake County Shrine Club. Reception to follow. Todd Berryman to give a prayer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions can be made to benefit the Shriner’s Burn and Crippled Children Hospital.
